Connecticut DOT pre-treats the highways with a sodium chloride brine before a storm arrives, so the salt is on the road before the first flake lands. The state's own guidance is to wash your car after snow to reduce corrosion.
That brine does not simply rinse off. It works into the seams, the suspension components, the brake lines and the inside of the wheel arches, and it keeps working through the spring long after the roads look clear.
This service is a dedicated flush of the underside and the arches, plus the lower panels and door shuts where salt spray collects. It is the cheapest corrosion insurance there is, and it matters most on the cars that spend the winter on I-84 and Route 8.
Questions about winter salt decontamination
When should I get salt removed?
Once mid-winter during a thaw, and again once the roads have properly cleared in early spring. The mid-winter one matters more than people expect — waiting until April means the brine has had three months on bare metal.
Is this included in an exterior detail?
The underside gets flushed as part of every exterior and full detail. This standalone service goes further and is worth it when there is visible white residue in the arches or on the sills, or after a winter of daily highway driving.
Does an automatic car wash undercarriage spray do the same thing?
It is better than nothing, but it is a fixed spray bar aimed upward for a few seconds. It does not reach into the arches or the seams where the salt actually collects, and it does not touch the door shuts.
Can you undo rust that has already started?
No, and be careful of anyone who says they can. Washing salt off prevents new corrosion; it does not reverse what has begun. If you already have bubbling or flaking, that is a body shop conversation, not a detailing one.
Do you do this in freezing weather?
We work around the temperature. Flushing a car in hard freeze can do more harm than good if water sits in door shuts and locks, so we pick a thaw window and dry the shuts properly afterwards.
